Shughart Elementary's Treasure Trove of News

Shughart Elementary's Treasure Trove of News. In this month’s newsletter, you’ll find a message from the administration, updates from our PE teacher, School Counselor, Information Specialist, Art teacher, School Nurse, and Educational Technologist, as well as school news, upcoming events, lunch menus, and additional resources.

Message from Administration

Dear Shughart Family,

As we enter the month of May, I want to extend my heartfelt gratitude to everyone for their unwavering support throughout our accreditation process. Our teachers and students have truly exemplified what we do best: instruct, learn, and support our military-connected students. Our visitors felt welcomed and were impressed by the wonderful things happening within our school.

Throughout this school year, we have worked diligently and made significant progress. This month, we take the time to highlight and support our incredible teachers who tirelessly give so much of themselves to others. We are deeply grateful for our educators who promote excellence for our students every day and everywhere.

With the end of the year and summer fast approaching, I remind our students and families to be well-rested for the upcoming summative assessments. Attendance remains crucial as our teachers will begin reviewing concepts to summarize the year and introduce material for the upcoming grade levels.

As we celebrate our achievements and look forward to the future, let's remember the words of Aristotle: "Excellence is never an accident. It is always the result of high intention, sincere effort, and intelligent execution; it represents the wise choice of many alternatives – choice, not chance, determines your destiny."

Thank you for your continued support and dedication to our school community.

Warm regards,

Shughart Administration Team

From the Pages of the Information Center

The end of the school year is rapidly approaching. The students have read many print and eBooks, and we are proud of their dedication to reading. Now that the school year is ending, book checkout will also end. The last day for students to check out books will be Friday, May 23. Students will need to return all books by May 30. After this, students can read books in our MackinVIA databases. In addition to the available eBooks, Tumble Premium also has a large assortment of books for students to read. Parents, be on the lookout for information regarding opportunities for summer reading.

Congratulations to all students who were selected as Book Champions this year. Each month, the student in each grade who checked out the most books received a prize bag and had their picture featured on the school bulletin board.

If you have any questions, please contact Dr. Ray at 910-861-7205 or sandra.ray@dodea.edu

Masterpieces in the Making: Shughart's Art Corner

second grade students in art class

Clay is still coming!  We are beginning to fire our glazed clay in the kiln.  You should see it coming home in the following weeks.  We share our kiln with the middle school, so it takes time.

Kindergarten and first grade have been learning about movement in art.  We are using our lines to make a fast roller coaster artwork.  We studied roller coasters and watched a POV video of a ride from Busch Gardens.  It was almost like being on the ride itself!  Next, we are going into some cool Spring art. Maybe a little something for all the moms.

Second and third grade are studying Op Art paper weaving.  Op Art is short for optical illusion.  We are going to use paper weaving to come up with some interesting designs.  Students will have the chance to make up their own.  After that, we will move into some Spring related art.  We may have a Pokémon surprise if time allows!

Fourth and fifth grade are also studying Op Art after the finish glazing their clay.  It will basically be the same as 2nd and 3rd, except we will expect 4th and 5th level results.

Nurturing Notes: Health Tips from Our Nurse's Desk

Five Tips to Beat the Heat

rising temperature with a blazing sun
  1. Know the warning signs. Excessive sweating, muscle pain, headache, vomiting, tachycardia, cold/clammy skin are signs and symptoms of heat illness.
  2. Take safety advisories seriously. A heat advisory is less serious than a heat warning. An advisory means it will be hot enough to    be very uncomfortable, and unless you are cautious it could be dangerous to your health and threaten life or property. A heat warning is the most serious heat alert, issued when conditions pose a threat to life or property. It means that within 12 hours the heat index will be at least 105 F.
  3. Drink plenty of water. To stay hydrated in hot weather, aim to drink 1 cup (8 ounces) of water every 15-20 minutes, especially when working or exercising outdoors, and drink before you feel thirsty.
  4. Take breaks in the shade. Use portable umbrellas, wear wide-brimmed hats, seek shelter under trees or shaded structures.
  5. Remember to reapply sunscreen. Reapply sunscreen every two hours, especially after swimming or sweating, and more frequently if you're engaging in prolonged outdoor activities.

Tech Tidbits

End of Year Chromebook Collection

As the school year comes to a close, we want to ensure a smooth and organized collection of Chromebooks. On Monday, June 2, 2025, students will be required to turn in their assigned Chromebook, charger, and Chromebook bag.

If your child is missing their Chromebook charger, we kindly ask that you assist your child in locating it. If the charger cannot be found, please note that it is the sponsor's responsibility to replace lost equipment. For replacement information, please click here.

Thank you for your cooperation in ensuring all equipment is returned in good condition. This helps us maintain the quality of our technology resources and supports a seamless transition into the next school year.

If you have any questions or need further assistance, contact our school’s Educational Technologist, Mrs. Sease at  danielle.smith-sease@dodea.edu

Shughart Tech Spotlight: Ms. Rohde's Class Explores Wants and Needs

First grader's needs and wants graphic organizer

In Ms. Rohde's first grade class, students have been diving into the important topic of wants and needs during Social Studies. Through engaging lessons, they learned to distinguish between the essentials for living and the extras that bring joy to their lives.

To demonstrate their understanding, students used Wixie during their independent learning stations. Their project involved creating a graphic organizer to categorize various items as wants or needs. Using clipart, they placed examples of their wants and needs on their graphic organizer.

Some of the needs identified by the students included clothing, a house, and food. Their examples of wants ranged from money and fidget spinners to ice cream, dogs, cats, and birthday cake.

This project not only reinforced their understanding of wants and needs but also allowed them to creatively express their ideas. Great job, Ms. Rohde's class! Keep up the fantastic work!
