Shughart Elementary's Treasure Trove of News

Shughart Elementary's Treasure Trove of News.In this month’s newsletter, you’ll find a message from the administration, updates from our information specialist, art teacher, PE teacher, music teacher, nurse, and educational technologist, as well as school news, December events, the lunch menu, and additional resources.

Message from Administration

Dear Students, Staff, and Families,

As we move into February, we want to emphasize the importance of maintaining open lines of communication with your child's teachers. Regular communication helps ensure that you are up-to-date with your child's progress and can address any concerns promptly. Whether through emails, phone calls, or scheduled meetings, staying in touch with teachers is crucial for supporting your child's academic journey.

We also want to remind you of the critical role that consistent school attendance plays in your child's success. Every day of learning counts, and regular attendance helps students stay engaged and on track with their studies. Please encourage your child to attend school every day and reach out to us if there are any challenges preventing regular attendance.

Lastly, we are pleased to inform you that report cards will be available through the parent portal on ASPEN. This is a great tool for you to review your child's academic performance and stay informed about their progress. If you have any questions about accessing the portal or interpreting the report cards, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Thank you for your continued support and partnership in your child's education.

Warm regards,

Shughart Administration Team

From the Pages of the Information Center

The Information Center is using a new library management system. Destiny (the previous system) is no longer active for book searches and other functions. The name of the new system is MackinVision. It has some nice tools to help students select books to read at home and school. MackinVision can be accessed from ClassLink (open the Information Center folder) or the Shughart ES home page.

We are excited about this new App and hope that students will be able to enjoy a valuable reading experience through MackinVision. A demo email on how to use MackinVision will be sent to parents soon.

Many of our students have overdue books. Please check your emails for overdue book notices and return the books ASAP. The overdue notices are sent to the email address you provided when you registered your children. If you have questions or concerns about books, please reach out to Dr. Ray at sandra.ray@dodea.edu and she will respond to you as soon as she is available.

Masterpieces in the Making: Shughart's Art Corner

Art club: Group 2 begins February 4th.  They will meet every Tuesday and Thursday from 3 to 4.

K-5: All grade levels will begin a heart themed project for February.

red heart shaped clay

Kindergarten and first grade will make heart shaped forms using air dry clay.  We want to practice fine motor skills required to make a slab of clay, cut out a heart shape, and round the edges.  We will finish by painting it.  This will be practice for a larger clay project we have next.

Second and third grade will be using a heart shaped stencil to create a textured sponge painted background.  They will add detail with brushes to make it more interesting.  A message or drawing of your student’s choice will be added to the middle of the heart.  We are focusing on using texture and color to place emphasis on the heart in the middle.  We will also discuss that art can have a purpose and create an emotional response from people.

Fourth and fifth grade will explore printmaking this lesson.  They will create a printing plate out of foam by making a design with recessed areas.  The design will focus on using a heart shape, and it must contain text.  The text will give them the opportunity to use their problem-solving skills.  You must do it correctly or it will print backwards.  Each student will be required to pull at least 4 prints of their design.  They can decide whether to keep them all or share them as valentines/artworks.

Tech Tidbits

hour of code logo

We are thrilled to announce that Shughart Elementary will be celebrating Computer Science Education Week from December 9-15! This special week is dedicated to introducing our students to the exciting world of computer science and coding. Our goal is to foster their interest in technology and help them develop critical thinking skills that are essential in today's digital age.

Kickoff Event: Tech T-shirt Tuesday

We will kick off Computer Science Education Week with Tech T-shirt Tuesday on December 10. On this day, students are encouraged to wear their favorite tech-themed t-shirts, whether it features gaming, coding, robots, or anything related to technology. Let's make December 10th a tech celebration!

Throughout the week, from December 10-15, students will have the opportunity to participate in Hour of Code activities. These engaging sessions are designed to introduce students to the basics of coding in a fun and interactive way. The Hour of Code aims to spark creativity and ignite an interest in coding among our students, providing them with a foundation in computer science.

We are excited to see our students dive into these activities and discover the fascinating world of coding. Thank you for your support in making Computer Science Education Week a memorable and educational experience for our students!
