In this month's newsletter, you'll find a message from our administration, end of the year information from the library, and summer reading and math activities to keep students engaged and learning during the break.

Message from Administration

Dear Students and Families,

As the school year ends, we want to extend our heartfelt gratitude for your unwavering support and dedication. Your partnership has been instrumental in creating a successful and enriching school year for all our students. We wish you a safe, joyful, and restful summer break. Please remember that the school will be open during the summer months, so if you need anything, feel free to call or stop by. We look forward to seeing everyone refreshed and ready for another wonderful year ahead.

From the Shughart Elementary Information Center

As the end of the school year approaches, we kindly request that you assist us in ensuring that all library books are returned as soon as possible. The due date for returning all books is Friday, May 31. If you have been receiving emails regarding overdue books or if we have sent a notice home with your child, please either find the books and return them or replace them with another book.

The following requirements apply to replacement books.

  • Does not have to be that same book.
  • Needs to be less than 10 years old (published after 2014.
  • Cannot have any obvious signs of damage such as writing or crayon marks, ripped pages, water-damaged pages, or frayed corners.
  • Needs to be appropriate for elementary school students. If you are not sure about whether the book is appropriate, please email Dr. Ray at sandra.ray@dodea.edu or call 910-861-7205.

Our Information Center plays a crucial role in helping children foster a love for reading and learning. We appreciate your cooperation in helping us to maintain our collection of books. If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to reach out to Dr. Ray or Mrs. Hinshaw at the number mentioned previously.

At Tutor.com, they partner with the U.S. military to provide students with no-cost, personalized online tutoring in all academic areas. They help learners of all ages and stages—from kindergarten through college, graduate school, continuing education, and career.

The Art Club offers students an opportunity to create engaging activities that provide students the opportunity to explore the use of a variety of media and art elements.

The Music Integration Club integrates song, dance and musical performances into the STEM Curriculum. Through a Symphony of Learning: Music becomes the Universal-language Spoken In our Community.

Pirate Ambassadors learn the value of being a leader within their school environment. Students will recognize the importance of leadership skills that can help students be advocates for themselves and their peers.

Our club gives students the opportunity to experience the world of robotics, by learning how to follow design instructions, build, and program robots, using Lego SPIKE Prime systems.

DoDEA School Dress Code

Students MUST wear:

  • Tops with sleeves (sleeveless tops/dresses are permitted for school sponsored formal events such as prom)
  • Solid clothing (not transparent or translucent) that fully covers the top and bottom from armpit to mid-thigh
  • Shoes (shoes must be safe for the school environment)
    • Bedroom slippers shall not be worn, except for school activities approved by the principal
    • Open toe shoes with a strap across the heel are allowed

Students CANNOT wear clothing with:

  • Language or images promoting violence
  • Language or images that depict, promote, or advocate the illegal use or sale of drugs, alcohol or tobacco products; violent conduct; curse words; pornography; that contain threats or expressions which are violent, discriminatory, lewd or obscene; or that advocate or promote any other illegal item or activity or the use of same
  • Derogatory speech/imagery targeting groups based on race/color, ethnicity/national origin, sex/gender, sexual orientation, disability, religion, or any other characteristic protected by law
  • Headgear that obscures the face (except as a religious observance or health purpose); clothing items with hoods attached can be worn but must not cover the head

* Teachers/courses can require certain attire as part of the curriculum (for example: physical education, culinary) that may include specific dress

* DoDEA issued athletic uniforms and athletic practice attire outside of the DoDEA school dress code is permitted when worn by participants during athletic practices and sports events
